Tree Planting & Cone Collection
NFMC’s 2025 tree planting program took place across several operating areas, including Kanusk, south of Highway 60, the Sturgeon Landing and Wanless area, and William Lake East along Highway 6. Through these efforts, nearly 2.6 million seedlings were planted to support forest renewal and long term sustainability.
While planting in the Kanusk operating area, crews were treated to an unexpected sight—bison grazing in the open areas. A reminder of the dynamic landscape we work in, and a hopeful wish that the freshly planted seedlings remain untouched.
In addition to planting, NFMC continues to support future reforestation through its cone collection program. Manitoba’s seed zoning system ensures seedlings are grown from seed collected within the same ecological zone where planting occurs. This year, 87 hectolitres of jack pine cones were collected from Seed Zone 3, intended for use in future Kanusk harvest and renewal operations.
Together, tree planting and seed collection activities play a critical role in supporting sustainable forest management and ensuring healthy, resilient forests for the future.
