Community Outreach Projects
Jordan's Principle Camp - In June, NFMC staff visited the Mosakahiken Cree Nation Jordan's Principle camp development location on South Moose Lake. An onsite review of the terrain and surrounding landform was conducted to assist in the creation of a site development plan to advance the project. A second visit was conducted a while later and the area was flown and photographed with a fixed-wing eBee Sensefly remotely piloted aircraft (UAV). The photos were stitched together digitally to form a photo mosaic of the site. A digital elevation model (DEM) was processed for the mosaic that facilitated the production of an elevation contour map to assist Jordan's Principle personnel with creating the site plan for the camp.
Big Island Access Project - In March and April, NFMC engaged with Moose Lake Resource Management Board (RMB) representatives and provincial government staff on an RMB initiative to develop emergency access to Big Island on South Moose Lake where Mosakahiken Cree Nation (MCN) has been developing a Youth Camp. NFMC assisted by identifying and mapping potential routes and providing suggestions on procedural components. NFMC continues to be available to assist the RMB and MCN to move this process forward.
Forest Practices Committee Mill and Bush Tour - Manitoba's Forest Practices Committee (FPC) develops and maintains a collection of forest practices guidebooks that provide a best management practices framework for different aspects of forest industry operation. The FPC consists of representatives from various Manitoba government departments and branches, Manitoba's forest industry, including NFMC and CKP, as well as other stakeholders, including Ducks Unlimited Canada and University College of the North. The committee got together in mid-September for a two-day session in The Pas. A field tour was organized for Day One by Northwest Regional Forestry staff, great job! The group attended several sites looking at some recent and older harvest areas, post-harvest residual stand structure for moose management, access decommissioning efforts and various renewal treatments and results. A boardroom style meeting was held on the morning of Day Two where the status and priority of various guidebooks was discussed and debated. In the afternoon, the group toured CKP's pulp and paper mill, thank you to CKP Mechanical Engineer Ryan Roberts for the very informative tour!
Traditional Territory Maps for OCN - NFMC was asked to collaborate with Opaskwayak Cree Nation Natural Resources office on several graphics and overview maps of OCN traditional territory that will be used in their upcoming Land-Use Plan.
