2 Billion Tree Program

Nekoté continued working with Nisokapawino Forestry Management Corporation (NFMC), Blue Green Planet Project, and Summit Reforestation to support Canada’s 2 Billion Trees program. This year’s tree planting took place in the Interlake–Devils Lake area, focusing on cutover sites that burned shortly after harvest, eliminating natural seed sources for regeneration. As part of this effort, three million jack pine and black spruce seedlings were planted to support long term forest recovery.

Community involvement was a key component of the project. Summit Reforestation engaged with Nekoté communities early in the hiring process, hosting community visits in March to share information and discuss employment opportunities for the upcoming planting season. These visits generated strong interest, resulting in twelve Nekoté community members joining the tree planting project.

This initiative reflects a shared commitment to environmental restoration, community investment, and the creation of meaningful employment opportunities through collaborative forest management.
