Passport to Employment

In early spring 2025, Canadian Kraft Paper Industries (CKP) and NFMC Woodlands staff spent the day with three participants enrolled in the OCN Industry Training – Passport to Employment program. The morning focused on introducing forestry activities and their connection to the paper making process, discussing sustainable forest management practices on Forest Management License No. 2, and providing an immersive experience using a harvesting simulator.

In the afternoon, participants joined NFMC staff in the field to gain hands on experience with forestry work. Activities included learning what a pre harvest survey involves, assessing the success of past silviculture programs, and measuring growth rates of trees planted more than 50 years ago.

The Passport to Employment program, launched in July 2023 through a collaboration between CKP, OCN, and the Northern Manitoba Sector Council, offers life skills development, safety training, and labour training for selected OCN members. The program is designed to prepare participants for full time employment opportunities with CKP.

Individuals interested in future opportunities are encouraged to contact CKP Human Resources for more information
