UCN Volunteering
NFMC continues to support forestry education by engaging with students from the University College of the North (UCN) Natural Resources Management program. Throughout 2025, NFMC staff met with students to introduce forestry practices in the region and to discuss the sustainability of the forestry industry and natural resource use by local communities, First Nations, recreational users, and the public.
During the winter months, NFMC staff visited UCN forestry classes on several occasions to speak about long term forest management planning, harvest block design, and public engagement as key components of responsible forest management.
In early September, NFMC and Canadian Kraft Paper Industries (CKP) staff joined students for two days of their three week remote field camp at Trampling Lake along the Grass River system. Students learned about forestry surveys conducted at different stages of the forest life cycle and accompanied CKP supervisors to observe an active harvesting operation. Later in the fall, students also participated in tours of the paper mill and woodlands office, including the scale and log yard.
These experiences help bridge classroom learning with real world forestry practices, providing students with practical insight and helping prepare them for future careers in the natural resource industry.
